Feds infuse rapid transit project

The Crystal City/Potomac Yard bus rapid transit project is getting a cash infusion from the federal Department of Transportation, Rep. Jim Moran (D-8) announced earlier this month.

About $990,000 from a DOT grant will go toward the project to pay for design work and station upgrades, officials said. The goal is to create a dedicated busway between Arlington and Alexandria capable of meeting new development.

Our public transportation must keep pace with the growing ridership along Route 1, Moran said in a statement. Todays funding is a welcome investment. Better public transit connecting communities along the Route 1 corridor helps attract new businesses to Northern Virginia and maintains the regions commitment to environmentally-friendly transportation solutions.

Stretching from Arlington down into Alexandria and ending at the Braddock Road Metro station, the five-mile north-south corridor has undergone a development boom in recent years, prompting the infrastructure project.
